out and instead stay on the job. one person tells us she plans to work until she dies. i'll tell what you, this isn't a new phenomenon. take a look at these numbers here. in 1998, 12% of workers over 65 stayed on the job by choice. in 2008, 17% of older workers delayed retirement. now we're at 18%. so we're seeing this number inch up. by 2018, it's forecast that 22% of workers are going to delay their requirement. now not everyone is staying at their current job. some choose to take on new projects. others start a business. one person tells us when he retired he started a small ebay business. then again some other people just decide to change careers. they got the confidence to do that. one mother who retired from the public school system is now a college professor and education consultant. some people have options, t.j., because at this age they're at the height of their careers and not really ready to pack it in and start golfing, gardening and bird watching. they want to reach to new heights in their careers. >> you give some of the reasons there they might want to keep working. ho

go, but it is going to cost. reza sayah is on the story for us this morning. reza, good morning to you. how much does i iran want? >> reporter: $500,000, t.j. that's how much they want. this has been a bizarre process in iran, and no doubt a difficult one for sarah shourd and her family to go through, of course. initially iranian officials came out last week and said sarah shourd would be released. then they said she wouldn't be released. and now today, again, they're saying she c be released, in exchange for half a million dollars in bail money. the latest twist came today at a news conference by tehran's revolutionary court prosecutor. the prosecutor saying today that shourd's f sarah medical condition, iran is offering to release her for that ba ail money. i don't think there is any doubt that her famy is somehow going to come up with thatmoney. it is not clear at this point when that's going to happen and when she will be allowed to leave the country. as far as the other two hikers go, shane bauer and joshua fattal, the prosecutor said today they're not going anywhere, they'

it began then. they didn't tell us that until a year later, and now they're telling us the recession ended in june of 2009. so more than a year ago. you have to say, why does it take so long? they take a while to come out with the numbers so they can pore through all of the economic data. this is being called the great recession. that is, tony, because officially now it lasted 18 months, the longest recession weaves a seen in this country since world war ii and the great depression. many people say it feels like we had a downturn. in june, 2009, when apparent the recession officially ended, our unemployment rate was 9.5%. now it is 9.6%. not only did the situation not get better from an unemployment standpoint. it got worse, that maybe more people coming into the workforce looking for jobs but overall the job picture hasn't improved. the housing picture hasn't improved or the consumer spending. so in june 2009, it ended. >> bottom line, this is all about a bunch of economists with this nonprofit technically scoring this period in time here. >> right. >> this is not about or even taking int

and recent college graduates. it got us thinking about the promises the president made as he came into office. of course, when he first got into office, very beginning no approval rating until we took one about february of 2009. it showed 76% of americans approved of the job he was doing. and then in february of -- now i should say it is 50% down. some 20 points. down some 20 points. look at this brand new poll of polls. not our poll. this shows that it's down 46%. down to 46%. the president's approval rating. that's not even our poll. take a look at this, though. this is all despite some legislative victories that the president had. health care reform. remember that? although very controversial, financial regulatory overhaul. the stimulus. plus, two supreme court justice confirmations. talking about sonia socieewonia and what is the problem, then? of course, it's the economy and unemployment, as the president heard yesterday. when he got into office, a poll taken around february of 2009. he was at 8.2%. now 9.6% and some think it's going up to 10% unprecedented, very tough for the president

shot there, but we are expecting conditions to go downhill. now, what about the u.s.? are we going to see any impact here? you bet we are, the same we did with earl and danielle. we've got a high risk of rip currents here on the atlantic coast, particularly bad into the carolinas. another thing that we're keeping our eye on is that disturbance in the gulf of mexico. maybe a little moisture from karl got wrapped up in this, but this is an upper level disturbance. right now it doesn't have a circulation, so it's not a tropical storm or a tropical depression. it's a wave or cluster of thunderstorms. the concern here is not necessarily that it has much time to turn into a tropical storm, but it a es going to bring torrential downpours. the rain from houston toward the south and west. flood watches in effect here. 3 to 5 inches expected and texas has been hard hit with a couple of different tropical depressions and storms already in the last couple of weeks. so adding more insult to injury with all this moisture, we're going to likely see river flooding as well as flash flooding from so

's the latest you have for us? >> reporter: represent oldz, winds have been picking up steadily the last few hours. here in ocean city, maryland, the worst is still ahead of us. we're awaiting those tropical storm winds. we have a little bit of rain but what we could be seeing as this system is off the coast and rotating, we're really waiting for the back end of it where we could see some really heavy rain and some winds that will have to be bracing ourselves for. this is the concern. take a look. this is the surf here, pretty rough seas and while the beach itself is not closed and people have been strolling along the beach and strolling along the boardwalk getting in a little fun before they may have to take shelter, the water is closed because of dangerous rip current conditions. no surfing, no swimming. we just talked with a lifeguard who said a lot of people are just coming out here to get a look. they're getting too close, maybe they're just wanting to get their feet wet, but there are a lot of unpredictable waves. we even saw this yesterday ourselves and they are warning people to get

started and told us we in recession before anybody else called it, with me last spring and summer when you said the recession is over. do you agree with, first of all, this? >> in april '09 we said the recession would end in the summer of '09. so we do agree with this. and we have been saying it was june or july. i totally accept the june date. why it's important is because the national bureau of economic research is an objective, using an objective methodology. we all have our feeling, we'll get to in a second, but they're use an objective scorecard for when the economy is expanding, con tragting in a recovery or recession, and it ended in june of '09. let's be clear what that means. all it means is that the economy made it into the recovery room. okay? and started a process of healing. now, anyone who a has been in that situation and made it into a recovery room knows that it still really, really, really hurts when you're in the recovery room, and we're still there. be very, very clear. that's a big part of the reason wyman on the street right now is going to say, who are these guys sayi
